Transitioning from graphite to colour pencils

Hi folks,
anyone made the transition from graphite pencil to coloured pencils? I'm interested but not sure how difficult it will be. What's been your experience?

Thanks.

Re: Transitioning from graphite to colour pencils

Yes, I started out in graphite and have done a handful of drawings in coloured pencil as well. It is more difficult than graphite in my opinion, but perhaps not as hard as you would think. With coloured pencil you don't really smudge, you blend. Get Prismacolor Colourless Blenders. They are a real help. It's a different technique, but having experience with graphite I think you will catch on quickly.

Re: Transitioning from graphite to colour pencils

Instead of blending I use layers of colored pencils. I color lightly in an area so I can decide if I like it. I guess I have a good eye for color because I usually like the first color I pick. You can click on my link to see some of my colored pencil works. I don't have too many because I've been lazy with drawing lately. I get more requests for sewing than I do with drawing. I guess people are just more interested in curtains, dog beds, and purses.

I finally got "hip" with the times and got on facebook. Hopefully this takes you directly to my art.

Re: Transitioning from graphite to colour pencils

I made the transition to CP a couple years ago and at first it was hard. CP are different from graphite, even though they are in pencil form and my instinct was to smudge I learned to build color and blend through layering. I started out doing research online and checking out books. The book that helped me out the most was Painting Light with Colored Pencil by Cecile Baird. It really explained how colored pencils worked and how to build up using layers. I guess my advice would be to do a little research.
