Re: movies

It's hard for me to list my favorite movies in a numerical list from greatest to least, so here's my Top 3:

1. Die Hard
2. Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie
3. Transformers: The Movie (1986)

And other movies I really enjoy (I'm mostly an action movie fan, though it irritates me when people make assumptions about me based on that):

*Die Hard 2 and 3
*The Lethal Weapon series
*The Rambo series
*Robocop 1&2
*Flight of Dragons
*Ghost in The Shell
*Ninja Scroll
*Nightmare on Elm Street (Haven't seen all of them, but the only ones I don't like so far are NOES2 and the remake)
*Land Before Time 1

You must be an overly muscled, bald, Hummer-driving, gun-toting conservative whacko with a list of favourite movies like that.

Re: movies

It was a good movie, I don't think I'd give it an A+ though.

Re: movies

I'd would give it an A+, but in the end it's a matter of opinion.
The American Film Institute has it listed as #78 in their list of the top 100 American movies.

Re: movies

As an American movie, definitely. The very clear pro-American angle it has would definitely be looked upon favourably by the AFI. I'm surprised they didn't rate it higher.

Re: movies

You mean that Lawrence of Arabia, at #5, has an pro american slant to it?

Re: movies

I watched Lawrence of Arabia in high school for an essay. I was writing about tragic heroes and compared T.E. Lawrence to Col. Nicholson from Bridge on the River Kwai and Mufasa from The Lion King. I believe it's the longest movie ever to win an Oscar (if I remember correctly it's over 4 hours)? Probably also the most boring!

I'm not trying to say that every movie on that list has a pro-American slant, just that I think in some cases that would probably have an influence, which is understandable considering it's the AFI making a list of American movies. I'd say Saving Private Ryan is very pro-American and despite that and the fact that it's one of the most notable and decorated war films of all time, it didn't make the list. I noticed that there are a lot more movies from the 1940's and 1950's on that list than I would expect, and far less from 1990 onwards. I think the list says as much about the interests of the people who chose it as it does about American movies over the past 100 years.

Re: movies

I don't think the first Rocky has a pro american angle.
Rocky is more about the human spirit. Never giving up. The Rocky character could be from anywhere, and the movie could take place anywhere, and it would still be the same.

Re: movies

The rags to riches, underdog plotline is a classic example of the "American Dream". I think it's very pro-American. Sure, you could subsitute Rocky for a character of another nationality and have it set somewhere else, but the fact that he is American and it is set in the US and it portrays an accepted American ideal makes it pro-American in my opinion. Whichever one it is (I can never keep them straight) where he fights the Russian is the most pro-American I think, it's similar to the 1972 Summit Series for Canada. Sport is a metaphor for global affairs. The 1972 Summit Series was referred to as the "Cold War on Skates." It wasn't "just" a hockey tournament, it represented capitalism vs. communism, east vs. west, etc. It's the same with Rocky. He isn't "just" a boxer going out to win a fight, he represents the everyday American working man going up against forces much larger than himself and through his grit and determination he comes out on top.
