Similar to what Shawn692 said, there was a time when Henry Ford had to decide between developing a steam powered car or a gas-powered car (this was before he set up his first assembly line). He chose the gas-powered Model T over the steam powered version, and then set up all of his assembly lines around that. Just think how different the world would be today if Ford has chosen the steam powered car! (less CO2 in the air, but probably a lot fewer trees as well, which would cause more CO2!).
