Rant about art and muses and more..and some questions.

I was asked a while ago about who inspired me to make art. I had to think about that for a while. I mean a lot of people who I have met or read about over the years have left a impression on me and that show's in your art. For example, Ozzy Osbourne was a childhood hero to me, he showed me that being nuts was ok! Peter Steele and type o negative was there to show me that being depressed was ok as well. Marilyn Manson was a guide to "the weird" for me. All where part of me and those people showed me it was ok to feel that way.
Now my father on the otherhand was a leverheaded, regular as clockwork kind of a guy how was great at wat he did, he showed me the first steps in cartooning. He made dolls of all things, he showed me how to make things in clay. After reading many books and watching countless movies, people like Dali and Giger popped up in my life and they become a part of you as well, in art and being. I studied art for a while at school and got to see most of the classics.I love the old dutch masters, there playfullness with light is never matched again. Where did that "talent" go? I have never seen a new artist make a Nightwatch again. How come that only in that period of times that kind of art was made? The egyptions never made art like that? Could they have done it if they had the same supplies?
So over the years I have taken in so many impressions that they shape you. Would I have been doing to same thing if I never have seen A clockwork Orange? Things that make you think are things that shape you.
I have seen hartship and pure hell over the years but also heaven. I believe that without the nad my art would be not what it is now, some call it dark. So how is your muse, your inspiration and why do you do what you and why do you draw or paint just that? Why that face?
Thanks for listening to my rant, I am very down at the moment and was thinking in a 100 mile an hour mode, sorry.

I just read a wee bit about the egyption portraits and that's a good question. They had paint and painted alot of art on walls and such. But the portraits of the people they drew...the ears and eyes are all out of proportion and I can't figure that out? If they could build with such precision like the pyramids, why the heck couldn't someone paint a realistic mug shot? Guess they painted what the king told them to.....or else!

I do it because there's no more peaceful place for me to be than at my drawing table working on something. I forget about everything else around me and I'm focussed on what's directly in front of me. I turn on some good music and I'm in heaven.

I also love it when I surprise myself. That's a motivation in itself. I think we've all had the moments when we stand back from a drawing and say, "hey, that's pretty good". It's that feeling that makes me keep pushing and trying to be better and more realistic.

Eventually, I am going to get into some deeper, more conceptual art that means something to me. But for right now my drawings are just a stepping stone that will hopefully bring me to that next level.

Cool topic. I'm interested to hear what other people have to say too.

Why

I agree with Brian about a number of things. First of all - the peace that comes with the focussing on the drawings. And also the core goodness of seeing that something we have done is pretty amazing ( at times). I also am in Heaven with the music and the drawing. Brian took all of my things to say! I recall reading that Mrs. William Blake (early 1800's, England) had a hard time answering a question about her husband ( William) , because, she said, "he spends so much time in Heaven"!. Art is that precious to us!
I was always curious about images- how they came to be, like the Mad magazine pictures or the Monster magazine photos, even. So I imitated them when I was about 8, with some coloured pencils, while it was raining outside.
At about 11 or 12 years I saw a small book of Modigliani nudes, and I had to have it! So I "took" it! (hmm). I tried to copy those images too. Without colour, my pics didn't amount to much. Soon I was in high school and I ran into the "great" artists of th past and was utterly enchanted with these 'statements' from history that lived on til today. My teacher loved renaissance stuff, and it was contagious. I was given an art encyclopedia from my parents, and I pored over its contents a lot. Had no time for the vases, or the Egyptian stuff, but loved the more realistic figurative art. So it was the books and the teacher(s) and the old masters, and the Ottawa National Gallery- and the pink buttocks of the model in a life drawing class, that kept me BE-MUSED.
Faces? Faces say it all! Faces area a medium of emotion, for me. I mean, once you cover up the entire anatomy with rayon, all you have left in this world is a face! I need faces and figures to feel complete in art.
One of my greatest muses is the musician Bob Dylan because of what his music did for me in the 1960's. He covered a lot of ground, and he did it in a new and innovative and personal way. Recently, a person who models her body has given me permission to use her photos in art, as I choose to. This is a first for me and it remains to be seen how that gesture on her part will enable me in my drawing and painting. If I had significant $ I could hire models, but I do not.
Viking- I hope you're feeling very much better. I too can get down and depressed and 'crazy', too... but I am always becoming more comfortable in my own shoes, and I see now that the rules and appearances of the times are essentially masks for the lack of common understanding between humans about Life. Life ( as we, too) really IS spiritual, and you 'd never know it, to read the newspaper or , even, by going to most churches! Living for ever, without groveling, is a MUSE in itself, and that's what we are all in for!

Don't get me started here. LOL!

But you have to think about something, especially when it comes to art in the past. There wasn't the media that we have now. They didn't have newspapers, television, the internet, and in some times, even BOOKS!! Only the wealthy had books.

So how did people get their "news"? ART!! And the reasons why art LOOKED the way it did, was because of people's perception of the "ideal" at the time.

Think about it. Who were the muses?

Egypt. Who were the most powerful and influential people? The Pharoahs and religious idols. Greece? Athletes, Gods, war heroes, and philosophers. Byzantine? GOD and ANYTHING CHRISTIAN!!! Neanderthals? ANIMALS and HUNTERS!!!

Artists were the "newscasters" and historians of their eras. And we STILL ARE!!

So when you think about our "muse", it is what inspires us the most. Right now it seems that among the young and hormonal, their muses are Harry Potter and Captain Jack Sparrow!!! LOL! But look at the art of the modern masters. They tell a different story. You can see what events have influenced their pieces. Hyper realist artist, Denis Peterson. Photorealism and surrealism artist, Armin Mersmann. Surrealist/Macabre artists, Chet Zar, and Mike Hussar. Look at them and you can tell what's going on in society!

So, not only are artists historians, but also anthropologists! :D
