New user Goody - first upload attempt

Hi guys,

just found this forum and joined after google searching pencil sketching looking for tips. This is the first drawing I have manged this year. its about my 10th serious attempt in my life as i'm normally too wrapped up with home . work etc. I have done a couple per year over the last couple of years. I have little knowledge of what i'm doing other than what i'm researching now , so would love any tips advice or comments.

Re: New user Goody - first upload attempt

ok sorry for confusion..
about me... i'm 42 male uk (west midlands) family man and draw rarely but i'm trying to do a bit more. I would say i'm pretty clueless apart from what I am reading so would welcome all feedback.

I will now try and add the pics I took at the stages and explain my methods. following research I now plan to change these methods based on what I have picked up.

Re: New user Goody - first upload attempt

Monday night - outline i currently use 2H as I figured this was light and anything harder I find scratchy. i free hand everyhing as i have never used a grid method before (although i could give this a try). My technique is all judging using fingers pencil widths etc etc. - I find this the hardest part as if things are not in proportion it detracts from the likeness. At the moment I just live with the proportion imperfections.

Re: New user Goody - first upload attempt

Wednesday night adding more shading.
B, 2B and a charcole pencil for the blacks.
- then refer to thurs (top post for the completed) - i would guess 2 hours mon, 1 hour Tue, 2 hours wed, 3 hours thurs - so total 8 hours approx.
any advice welcome.

oh and forgot to say blending, used a stump for the first time on this.
less fingers (but still some)
and got the white line in the coat by scratching with a screw driver (nearest sharp point to hand) before shading with the pencil - found the tip on the net.

Nice work there Goody, all your mistakes will get ironed out as time and knowledge progresses. My advice would be...always try and make the next Artwork better than the last.
Tips,
Mechanical pencil is a must, you can buy them cheap at Tescos or Sainsburys. 0.5 is a good friend at the moment.
No fingers on the Artwork (acid).
And draw what you see,not what you think you see.

Re: New user Goody - first upload attempt

great thanks a lot guys

with the pencils I find it hard to know when to use them as to me the higher B's arent any darker you can get just as dark with lower B's by pressing harder.
Also when would I need a mechanical pencil ?- i guess fine lines.

next drawing I'm going to grid and see how that goes, but not gonna start until i have read a bit more on here and chosen a photo - but it will be another face portrait. probably start next week.

Re: New user Goody - first upload attempt

personaly i use my lil cheepo mechanical for most all my main line works( pentel energize pencil .7), then use my wooded pencils for shadeing and blending.
stumps paper towels and q tips are my main blending tools sence i learned to keep my grubby mits off the work. helps it stay crips and clean.
something i did when i first picked up my pencils (2h-9b) was take a scarp page of the good paper i was going to use and did a bunch of test to see how to get the best results. i do the same with color pencils as well.
duno if this will be very helpful.
just dont be hard on yourself and keep em comeing. the more you draw anything. the better you get at it. hold on to some of your older works so u can compaire and watch your own growth. i have found this to be a priceless tool.
best wishes and looking forward to more from you.
