Taking Drawing 101

So I decided to actually take an art class. Drawing 101... Any advice for a first time art student?? =)
After the entire Shepard Fairey debacle, I am still left confused about what type of work is protected from copying in a drawing. Obviously photographs are game, but are paintings? I found an image I am drawing and really want to give the original artist credit but I cannot find him/her. I ran it through tin eye, but obviously get everything except for what I am looking for...

From what I can tell the upload process has changed..guess I have some light reading to do!
Great artists do not rely on talent but the countless numbers of hour practicing and honing a skill.
