Hi all

I started a new portrait a bit of a challenge this time, it's an older man with wrinkles and a white beard, lots of negative drawing there then!!

About 10 hours in so far and obviously a long way to go.

C&C welcome!!

Awesome!!! [-o<

One question:

Is there a person inside the eyes?

Thanks for the comments.
Johnathon - Yes I'm assuming it's the photographer, one eye is slightly lighter and allows more of the figure to be seen than the other.

Hi all
I haven't posted or drawn anything in quite a while, been mad busy with life and work. I spent another couple of hours on this piece this week, thought I'd update the post and hopefully get some helpful criticism and advice on drawing wrinkles, they just look too flat and linear.

That's looking fantastic. The only criticism I can give is to work with your value. The way the light hits it and the subtle shades mean everything especially in eyes and wrinkles. There's a guy on YouTube that explains all this extremely well. Look up 5 pencil method. I guess what I'm trying to say is the gradation of it all however subtle has a huge impact. Search through my threads and you'll see the jack Nicholson joker I did. That's one example of what I mean. It took forever but if you keep building those layers it will come out I promise. Maybe you could post the reference photo and we could explain further.

Lazy link http://dueysdrawings.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=5963 I could have done so much more with the hair but that's my weak point. The left eye shows more of what I mean. It's all eraser and fine layers of graphite until I got it the way I wanted. I tried to stay away from bold lines to make it appear more natural.

Dreaddinit thanks for the reply, the joker pic is fantastic (I wish you'd left the colour out but that's just my taste :D ), I can see what you mean about the gradation of tone associated with the wrinkles, I think I might try to introduce more of a tonal gradation into each dark wrinkle and progressing to a lighter tone to indicate roundedness and volume.

Then the next hurdle is the white hair and beard, I think I might make him bald :D

Thanks. I didn't put any color in it. What your seeing is bad lighting and a not so great camera haha. Im looking forward to seeing more of this. The eyes are cool to I didn't see that there was a person in them. Hope I helped. Mike.
