"Conte crayon" - they should probably drop the "crayon" part of the name because they're nothing like crayons we normally think of. They're basically like a charcoal stick except not quite as soft or messy. I guess there is some wax in the stick to hold them together. They're comparable to pastels in a way, but aren't as soft. Somewhere in between a charcoal stick and a hard pastel. I think they're great for drawing and shading with, although there can be some mess that you have to get used to dealing with.
