Cottage Cross Hatching - WIP - Looking for advice

Hi Guys,

I am actually looking for your advice, as you can see in the photo below the thatched roof of the house does not have much contrast or any obvious features to draw only a slight texture across the whole thing. I am not looking forward to cross hatching it (thats why I have left it to the end!) because it would require broad hatching strokes which are quite hard to do (if I do short strokes it will leave a line where the stroke ends, making it look like there is something there and not just a flat object) broad strokes often end up curving naturally with my hand movements.

I was wondering if it would be better to use the stippling technique to cover the roof as I think this would more closely resemble the texture of the roof, I am just wondering if changing the technique in the image would make the picture look very odd? I would love to get your opinions!
