Re: New aurochs drawing

Auroch .... that sounds Scottish.

Definitely looks like it could still be alive and living in the deep mysterious woods somewhere.

What's next ? Maybe a mammoth or mastodon ?

Re: New aurochs drawing

Thanks, Aphos.

Ironic observations being made.

it's not a Scottish word, but the animals with the genes the least changed
from the aurochs are....the Scottish Highland cattle, which usually have long reddish
hair.

I didn't put background on this image because it's more of a technical drawing,
trying to figure out what an aurochs would like. I might put it on a blueprint background.

The word is always aurochs. Singular or plural.
I guess it means primeval ox.

On another note.... I finally thought I found a place where I could
converse with other people about aurochs, but I guess it's a case of be careful what you
wish for: http://www.carnivoraforum.com/index.cgi ... 232&page=2

Re: New aurochs drawing

Ox-Tail is back on the menu at my house, since being removed by the health authorities during the 'Mad Cow' problems years ago in England,It's a lovely old fashioned hearty winter food. =P~

Tom,what is your fascination with Aurochs, are you a farmer or a cattle historian? (serious question)

Re: New aurochs drawing

I'm neither, Russ.
I guess I have several reasons for my fascination.
Even as a kid I found bulls interesting. Large, scary, powerful animals.
I also like wildlife, and think when an animal goes extinct, because of humans, it's a shame.
A bull aurochs were larger, faster, and more powerful than most of it's domesticated descendant.
They are also the first wild animal that humans took note of going extinct . That happened in 1627.
The Dodo bird was the second.
Now there's a really good chance that they're going to be brought out of extinction.
I find it hard to believe that most people aren't more fascinated by this.

As for my most recent drawing, I found the first of my artwork, posted on the internet by someone other than me.
It was my "corrected" aurochs drawing. http://www.flickr.com/photos/europeanwi ... hotostream
To me it just didn't look right. So I tried to figure out a way to get the right proportions.
There's an aurochs skeleton in a museum, with the silhouette what it would have looked
like. So I manipulated an image of a Bull to match the skeleton, and silhouette. I was told that the museum piece is a little off
and what needed to be corrected. That' how I ended up with the current piece.
Now I have a much better idea how to correct my first image.

Re: New aurochs drawing

At first all I saw was a cow .. (bull)
But now that I know the story, it is indeed fascinating.
An extinction is a tragedy .. and one caused by humans is an unforgivable crime.

On the lighter side, I once went to "Hell on Hooves II" a professional bull riding event - we had seats right by the chute, and watched these guys climb down in top of a snarling snorting beast the size of a car.

Re: New aurochs drawing

I guess a technical drawing of an aurochs is needed at the moment
This is what I found on the Wikipedia site for Aurochs today.
Image

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurochs

Not only does the illustration of the aurochs look like a balloon,
but they're still using the exaggerated height.

This would be probably more accurate for the average bull aurochs. 170 cm

Yeah...I know. I know.
No one cares.

Someone must care - there's a wikipedia page !
You should edit the page with the corrections.
