Cross Hatching Tutorial

Here is a simple cross hatching tutorial, it is the process I go through to do all my cross hatching drawings and it really can not fail however detailed or complex a drawing.

If you use this tutorial and find it helpful, please link to it when you upload your drawing onto a website or the internet. I love to share my knowledge with others and there is nothing greater than seeing people finding my tutorial helpful! Also why not post what you have come up with on this great blog and inform me so I can see the results ;)

Awesome! Thanks for sharing... I am going to practice. I just need someonw to shoot me with a tranquilizer dart before I start because I know I'm too hyper to sit still long enough

Haha, I can't either, thats why it takes me so long. I just put music I love on, that normally keeps me sitting still a bit longer. Also I am not sure if I mentioned in the tutorial but make sure what you are drawing has plenty of tone or shade to it and then it is a lot easier to see where to hatch! Drawing a ball with one light source is a good way to practice!

Re: Cross Hatching Tutorial

great tute. My issue is I cant get the dark values, or if I do the hatching is no longer visible cause Ive had to go over it so many times or with a pencil that is so soft that I just cant get fine lines. Looking at your image of the soccer player, even the darkest areas clearly show hatching. How do you do it? Or is the image reduced from much larger?

I use fineliner pens, which are just solid black, when used really quickly they give a thin and light line. when I am doing the dark areas I cross hatch until there is no point any more and then fill the dark area in with pen or brush, sometimes I will have cross hatched an area up to 6 or 7 times until I realise I probably would have been quicker to just fill the area in. I actually use pens for this reason, they give a much more precise line compared to pencils.

The Rugby player was drawn on A3 paper so to some extent there is more space in it but if you have a look at my other illustrations you will see what I mean - http://darkdesigngraphics.co.uk/fine-art/

It also depends on what you are drawing, cross hatching is a way of creating tonal scale, if you are drawing a dark black shadow then there is no point using cross hatching for that area, you shouldn't really need to use different pencils because the cross hatching method is what you use to create the tone, if you use an HB pencil to create the drawing the darkest area will only ever be as dark as the pencil. For the rugby player I used I think a 0.2 fineliner pen which is very thin and obviously shows a lot. The reason there are no filled in shadows is because the image I was drawing from didn't have any!

hope this makes sense I have written quite a lot lol.
